Herefordshire LUG is pleased to announce a special event demonstrating the use of open source tools in a professional multimedia environment. The event will be held at Grange Court in Leominster, Herefordshire and will start at 7.30pm.
There will be a collection to cover the small room booking fee.
Looking specifically at:
Blender as a video editor. Demonstration/workshop into, navigating the monster that is the UI, the basics of editing, simple transition effects, and settings for rendering.
- Audio.
Ardour, Audacity how close is the experience to the proprietary software world?
- Graphic Design,
Is it possible to make products that are on a level with their proprietary counterparts?
- Which distros should be considered for use?
- Is it possible to replace the proprietary software totally?
- What is holding many back from going permanently down this route?
Wifi and refreshments will be available. Further details nearer the event.

As this event is being held at an alternative venue, to the one you use for your monthly meetings, I had (obviously wrongly!) assumed that it would be more of a ‘casua’l event, open to the general public, with the intention of ‘showing off’ the benefits of using Linux as a possible alternative to Windows, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.
As I live in that area I will certainly try to call in at some time during the evening however.

Just to be clear, this June event is open to the general public and all.
You have an interesting point though. Our LUG membership does not command a fee, just signing up to the mailing list makes you a member (semi officially) as some kind of means to know who is in the group. Being an ‘open minded’ group relating to computing and life in general, we do not have a policy on who can attend our meetings, generally anyone is welcome who is interested or who thinks they may be interested in the subject at hand.
So please come along and tell anyone you think may be interested to come along. The room seats 25-30 max, and there will be a small charge to cover the room hire which will be the room hire charge divided by number of attendees.

The point I was trying to make is that to advertise “…a special event demonstrating the use of open source tools in a professional multimedia environment.” does not sound to me like something will will actually encourage members of ‘the general public’ to come along to find out what Linux is all about..
Had it been advertised as something like “Can we offer you a free replacement for Windows XP?” for example, I can see that sort of subject possibly having a somewhat wider appeal, although perhaps you are only interest in attracting folk who are already dedicated Linux enthusiasts (?) which is a shame, and possibly a missed opportunity I feel?
I did in fact sign up to your mailing list some time ago now although, as I mentioned in another post on here, I am still not quite sure how it ties in with the website!
I will certainly come along to the meeting though, where hopefully I will have the opportunity to meet you, and other members of the group, in person, some of whom might even have similar interests to myself!

I have changed the wording from a small fee to a collection to pay for the room hire, we don’t want to put off newbies who may want to pop their ears in for a few minutes….
