November HLUG Meeting 27/11/2013

Sun, 24/11/2013 – 20:39 — julianr

Hi Everyone

Just a quick note to say our November meeting will be on Wednesday night at 7.30pm, usual place the Courtyard in Hereford on the mezzanine floor.

If you attended our Software Freedom Day event, please feel to come along on Wednesday

The meeting will start at 7:30pm as usual.

Items to discuss :-

New HLUG website – my job hunting has got a whole load busier over last couple of weeks with a couple of interviews and some work for me, so as yet I have been unable to setup user logins for everyone who asked for them. I hope to complete this shortly before Weds so you’ll have something to start on .. Probably best to port some of the old contenmt over such as our previous events , but adding lots of new contnet too.

December Christmas meal will be held at the Ponte Vecchio Italian restaurant in Hereford on a date TBA. I will ring them this week and find out what availability they have. The Courtyard has free fast wifi and serves lovely coffees, and there is level access to all public areas of the building. You can find directions to The Courtyard, Edgar Street, Hereford, HR4 9JR here

October 2013 Meeting – Weds 23th – at the Courtyard – everyone welcome

October Meeting – Weds 23th – at the Courtyard – everyone welcome

Hi Everyone Just a quick note to say our October meeting will be on Wednesday night at 7.30pm, usual place the Courtyard in Hereford on the mezzanine floor.

If you attended our Software Freedom Day event in September, please feel to come along on Wednesday.

The meeting will start at 7:30pm as usual. I’ve been out of the loop a bit recently, with family issues to deal with, so haven’t had any opportunity to get any agenda planned.

One thing we can look at is our next presentation night. Although we have the kind offer of a training room with the facilities we require, ie wifi at Hampton Court in between Leominster and Hereford, a couple of voices wondered said they may not be able to attend it as it was ‘a bit out of the way’. I personally think it would make a good venue but it needs some discussion, as to whether a free venue with no charges for hire at Hampton Court is preferable to a paying venue in a more centrally located place such as Hereford or Leominster, etc ..

Also there is the new HLUG website ? Didn’t get chance to look at this last time.  I might have some time to spend on this to get it set up anew. But what do we want to do with the site ? and how can we keep it up to date and fresh .. ?

June 2013 – Special Meeting – Open Street Map Presentation

June 2013 – Special Meeting – Open Street Map Presentation

Tue, 18/06/2013 – 21:58 — julianr

“Getting Started with OpenStreetMap”

We have a special meeting in June with a special presentation from Ben Proctor on Open Street Map. We have booked a meeting room at St John’s Ambulance, Widemarsh St, Hereford HR4 9HN on Tuesday 25th June 2013 at starting 7.30pm with a 9pm finish. Please note as we have had to hire the room there will be a small charge to attend this event. We hope to get as many old and new members and newcomers along to this exciting event.

OpenStreetMap is sometimes called Wikipedia for maps. It is a vast, remarkably accurate and powerful database of global mapping information provided by volunteers and free for anyone to use.

I hope to give you a quick overview of how it works. How easy it is to edit. Why you would bother to edit it and ways in which the maps have been and will continue to be useful. I hope it will be fairly practical and if people bring laptops they should be able to get editing the map straight away.

My hope is that you’ll get a sense of how easy it is to get started and to make use of the mapping data. This is an overview and hopefully some pointers to get you started. However if you have experience using OpenStreetMap it would be great to have you there to share your experience.

If we have time maybe we can touch on some open source GIS tools and other open mapping projects like Ushahidi (which is a tool I’ve used for a few projects).

I am aware that some LUGs have embraced open mapping and that in some areas pub crawls are combined with mapping in a useful and enjoyable way. Maybe some people will want to take this further. No pressure.

You may want to sign up for an OpenStreetMap account now. You never know when you’ll need it

Special note for Linux folk:

OpenStreetMap is an open data project and the tools to edit it are available for many OS’s. If you want to try some editing on the night you’ll need a browser that is comfortable running lots of funky javascript and you’ll need an up to date java environment installed. If you fancy you can install JOSM. There is an Ubuntu repository.
