I George, am using this User Logon as 'Archivist' because posts pages and comments written in it will be signed by 'Archivist' . They are other people's writings which I am copying and pasting into the HLUG website, so I do not want to sign them as 'George', which is for things I write myself.

PCI Compliance

I am having to fill in a questionaire designed by SecurityMetrics to conform to PCI Compliance standards and am painfully getting fined for non-compliance.  I told them I was running Ubuntu Linex and that the ports are closed.  They still said I have to complete the questionare to obtain complaince.

The questions I am not sure how to answer are to do with firewall software and the configeration is to the standard they require; whether I need to install anti-virus software: and on what criticial security patches I have.

I have tried saying the above items do not apply and it comes out FAIL!

I am running Ubuntu 12-04 LTS and always get the updates.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

February Meeting – 27th February 2013

We will be meeting in the Courtyard Theatre, in Hereford on the Mezzanine Floor again this month.

The meeting will start at 7:30pm as usual. The meeting will be an open meeting as my plans to arrange a talk fell through unfortunately 🙁 Hopefully we’ll get a talk/demo lined up for next month. Everyone is welcome including our new recent members. (don’t worry we don’t bite 😉 )

The Courtyard has free wifi and serves lovely coffees, and there is level (and/or lifts) access to all public areas of the building. You can find directions to The Courtyard, Edgar Street, Hereford, HR4 9JR.

The Courtyard has pay and display parking adjacent and free parking a short walk away.

It would be great to see any of the recent signups to the group, or anyone who hasn’t been for a while. The Courtyard makes a very nice venue too.

I’ll see you there at 7.30pm

* New meeting venue suitable for Workshop style events for the LUG * Update on new website and change in HLUG hosting currently taking place. We are keen to know what members want from the new website and what they also want to put in.

Hello everyone

After one of our most successful events in the history of HLUG, ie Software Freedom Day a few weeks back, we’re back to the normal monthly meeting schedule..

For our September meeting we will be holding a bit of a follow up to SFD, effectively an evening for those new to Linux and/or open source to help them with their installs or software / hardware configuration. So please any new members please come along if you need any help with Linux ..

We will be meeting as usual on the mezzanine floor at the Courtyard in Hereford at 7pm, a slightly earlier start.

Herefordshire Open Source Star Awards 2011

The 2011 HOSS awards were presented to the winners by Hereford’s Mayor Councillor Anna Toon at HLUG’s Open Source Day  on March 26, 2011 at All Saints,  Hereford.

 

The HOSS award for the promotion of Open Source in the business sector went to Heather and Kevin Dontenville of OpenSure for bringing Open Source IT solutions to local enterprises.

The HOSS award for work in administration went to Dr. Ashley Tucker and the HCC/Herefordshire NHS WIMS team for beginning the process of adoption of Open Source solutions in Hereford County Council

The HOSS award for outstanding personal achievement went to Dr Tony Sales  for the continuing development of the Vinux project – empowering the visually impaired around the world through free accessible software.

They are all very worthy winners and we hope that their work will inspire others to promote and contribute to Open Source projects in the county  and further afield.

If you,  your organisation or someone you know deserves a HOSS but you didn’t get a nomination in this year don’t worry you can enter for the 2012 HOSS Awards  – just watch this space
